Update: Check our Servant Sunday page for more info.
I’m really getting excited about our upcoming Servant Sunday on February 26!
First of all, I love the concept. What would it be like to worship God by serving others? How can we embody our faith with practices of justice and mercy? The prophet Habakkuk tells us to “write a vision, and make it plain upon a tablet so that a runner can read it.” What a powerful vision it will make to see our entire worshiping congregation doing the ministry that Christ has called us to live!
Secondly, I am excited about the ministries that we will have the opportunity to support on that day. Stop Hunger Now is an international hunger relief organization that distributes food and life-changing aid to the world’s most vulnerable, mobilizing the necessary resources to end hunger by 2030. Now that is a bold claim and a clear vision! On Sunday, 2/26 our goal is to package over 10,000 meals! I was part of the group that packaged meals at the Stop Hunger Now location in Lenexa and I have to tell you we had a great time! It’s hard to imagine that hunger is so prevalent in our world. And to think that in just a couple hours we could provide 10,000 meals means that ending hunger truly is within our grasp. And it was an opportunity for children and their families to work together to package meals.
I invite you to consider being part of this ministry on February 26. AND I invite you to start now by collecting the loose change you might have around your house. Each meal only costs .29¢! Take a look in your pockets, in the console of your car, or in your dryer and see what loose change is lurking at your house! For every .29¢ you find, you can provide a meal for someone who is hungry. So start looking, and bring that small change to the church…and make a big difference in someone’s life!
In addition to Stop Hunger Now, the Community Blood Center will also be here to receive life-giving donations of blood. And we’ll have tables set up with cards and notepaper so you can write a letter or a note to a soldier who is deployed in active duty. Share your appreciation for their service and help connect them to folks back home!
There will be other ministries as well. More plans are being finalized this week. As you can see, there will be many chances to put your faith in action that day. Plan to join us for this very exciting, very meaningful Servant Sunday.
