read bible daily

Our Sermon Series is exploring how we “Serve God by serving others.” In preparation for this week, we are reading Luke 13:1-9 to learn how practicing justice will bring us closer to Jesus.

Find the daily readings below along with questions for reflection. Join (or begin!) the discussion in the comments. We’d love to hear from you about how reading the Bible daily is bringing you closer to God and one another.

You also may be interested in joining a small group that focuses on exploring the scripture for the following Sunday’s sermon or learning how to approach Bible study in general – or a variety of other opportunities to “seek answers to our questions” as part of a group. Check it out here!

NOVEMBER 9

Read: Luke 13:1-9

Reflect: What questions do you have after reading this passage?

Respond: Comment below to share your response to reading and reflecting on these passages.

NOVEMBER 10

Read: Luke 13:1-2

1 At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. 2 He asked them, “Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans?

Reflect: Jesus refers to Pilate’s public massacre of worshipers in the Temple that he considered were causing a public disturbance. How do you react when you hear of violent measures used to keep the peace?

Respond: Comment below to share your response to reading and reflecting on these passages.

NOVEMBER 11

Read: Luke 13:3

3 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did.

Reflect: If repenting means a change of mind that leads to a change in action, what do you pray God will help you to change?

Respond: Comment below to share your response to reading and reflecting on these passages.

NOVEMBER 12

Read: Luke 13:4-5

4 Or those eighteen who were killed when the tower of Siloam fell on them—do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? 5 No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did.”

Reflect: Here Jesus refers to a tragic accident that killed 18 people and dispels the thought that a vengeful God was punishing them for their sins. Why do you think it is so important, sometimes, to find someone/s to blame in a tragedy?

Respond: Comment below to share your response to reading and reflecting on these passages.

NOVEMBER 13

Read: Luke 13:6-7

6 Then he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. 7 So he said to the gardener, ‘See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil?’

Reflect: When have you been ready to give up on someone or something in your life?

Respond: Comment below to share your response to reading and reflecting on these passages.

NOVEMBER 14

Read: Luke 13:8-9

8 He replied, ‘Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. 9 If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down.’”

Reflect: How do you see this as an act of justice?

Respond: Comment below to share your response to reading and reflecting on these passages.
