Say, “Welcome to the United States!”
Spend a couple of hours loading a Catholic Charities truck with basic furniture and household supplies at the KCK warehouse and then unloading it at a refugee’s apartment. Sign up and then pick move-in dates and times on signupgenius that fit your schedule. What a gift to refugees! Contact Cara Duncan at Catholic Charities, firstname.lastname@example.org, 913-621-1504 ext. 1114.
Catholic Charities works through their TurnStyles thrift store to gather and stage all that is needed to furnish an apartment for newly arriving refugees. Furniture can either be dropped off at one of the TurnStyles locations or you can call to request a pick up for a donation.
Items in shortest supply are kitchen or dining tables and chairs, and dressers. Gently used couches are also needed. Items that cannot be accepted are mattresses, box springs, cribs, and items in poor condition. (New mattresses are purchased for all refugees.) Of course, they also accept many other clothing and household items not mentioned here.
Where will my furniture go? At any given time, TurnStyles stores about 10 households of furnishings for refugees. All TurnStyles donations are put on the sales floor and then selected from there to replenish the refugee warehouse. Excess donated items will be sold and the proceeds split among all of the programs Catholic Charities supports for both the needy and for refugees.
Schedule large item pick up (suggested $20 donation): 913-909-2735 (8am-2pm M-F) or email email@example.com. Furniture must be gently used and ready for pick up in an easily accessible ground floor location, like a garage.
